Florida Wildlife Encyclopedia: An Illustrated Guide to Birds, Fish, Mammals, Reptiles, and Amphibians

It's important to be judicious in reviews, but I simply cannot find fault with this book. I have taken it on many hiking and exploring trips throughout Florida and found it to be a constant resource. If you are looking for a field guide for Florida wildlife, a source for more detailed information on a variety of species, or simply an interesting coffee table book, this one is exceptional. The book starts with an exploration of Florida ecology and geology, explaining ecoregions, habitats, and major water sources complete with many maps. The sections of the books are then divided into Mammals, Birds, Crocodilians, Turtles, Lizards, Snakes, Amphibians, and Fishes. The pages are efficiently organized to provide size, variation, abundance, habitat, breeding behavior, and natural history of each species - typically 3 species to a page. Each species has a large full color photo, and if there is significant sexual dimorphism or variety between morphs there may be more than one image. I use this book frequently to ID a bird or reptile that I have seen while walking through a park and find it far more efficient than using an Audubon guide that presents animals found all throughout North America. I also have gotten a lot of pleasure from the interesting details provided in the Natural History section for each species.

A lot of interesting wildlife info in here. Well written, well made book. Gave as birthday gift and my Dad loved it.

Huge book filled with great information and a lot of photos. It makes a great reference book for the Florida state of nature. It is like an encyclopedia of great Florida knowledge.

This book is wonderful. A great addition to any bookshelf.

Great for fishermen, schools, birding folks, and just anyone that lives or travels in Florida. I bought it to learn the differnt fish and sea life when my husband is snorkling and when my family goes fishing. But I also like to bird watch in my retired life, wow is it full of great photos and information on every type of bird. We just got this book, but cannot get enough of it.
