Pearls are a natural product so there may be some variation in size and grain. Semi-precious stone is an outdated name, which used to be used for various gemstones with less hardness or for opaque (not translucent) gemstones. The difference between semi-precious stones and gemstones: stones, because of their special appearance are made into jewellery, but those which are neither rare nor precious are referred to as semi-precious stones. Semi-precious stones include, for example, agate, amethyst, jasper, lapis lazuli, malachite, obsidian and onyx.
