Flawed and persistent connectivity issues, even 2 years later.
Unfortunately I can't recommend this NAS. After 2 years of use and many firmware updates, it still has major connectivity issues.I don't know if the NAS itself just crashes it's own OS or it just loses all data communications, but it frequently sits there with all the hard drive activity lights flashing in unison, though being utterly unreachable from any other device, The only way to restore connectivity is to just press and hold the power button until it shuts off. Even having a scheduled restart, and the latest firmware, does not alleviate this problem.Aside from the connectivity issues, it's an alright NAS enclosure that does the job, though don't expect any sort of major performance from it. I just find it unfortunate that even 2 years on, this NAS is less useful and less reliable an old D-Link Sharecenter which was about 1/4 the price (though admittedly is only a 2-bay rather than 4-bay device).

It may not be the best in peformance, but it's ok for what I want it for.
I had 4 WD 3TB Reds haging around collecting dust (Long Story), so I decided to build a RAID 5 Nas for home. I didn,t want to spend a lot on it and all I wanted for was more for storage. So I went for the TS-431.Other than the inital setup issue (It took over a day to build RAID 5...) it working very well for what I wanted for and I'm still playing around with it to see what more I can do with it. (I'm enjoying the remote access at the moment). One thing to note, it is very quiet (as in, you can have it in your bed room and sleep without it been disrupting)So far worth the 5 stars

Failed after 4 years
I have purchased a number of Qnap Nas enclosures over the years and most have been reliable. I have 2 x 8 bays nas drives and 1 x 6 bay drive. I find that the smaller models (up to 4 bay) are very poor quality and this 4 bay model died after only 4 years - my 6 bay is still going well after 6 years! I have also had a 2 bay that died after 18 months. Therefore, I would recommend avoiding the 2-4 bay models as they are so unreliable.

Not supporting Plex anymore
Brilliant NAS but unfortunately Plex is no longer available for download from the App Store - one of my main reasons for buying it. It was there for a while, even though it was really dodgy to use and died a death every time I tried it. But now it's gone and is only supported by the higher versions of hardware. If this isn't an issue for you, then buy this lovely bit of kit now!It does take you to know a bit about networking protocols sometimes but a Google search can explain these to you so you know what to enable as you go.

Multi Function NAS which works well.
Bought to replace older iomega NAS. Works well, now that the firmware has been updated a couple of times to cure the lockup that was happening every morning (while media centre was indexing, it seems).Last few months have been fine. Integrates well with AD on server for controlled access.

Solid reliable NAS enclosure with pretty good transfers
I've been using QNAP TS-431 case enclosure (replaced old DNS-321) for almost a year now and I couldn't be happier. I used four WD RED 1TB 2.5'' drives and the case stays absolutely cool. During entire year I've experienced only one freeze (older firmware) where I had to soft reboot. Currently I'm using NAS as a file server, NVR and media server. Works perfectly with HikVision IP cameras. Transfers are pretty decent on a gigabit network (around 12-15MB/s) for quite cheap £200 NAS enclosure. I would highly recommend for all personal home solutions.

I love it
This is the first and only NAS drive that I've used but I found it easy enough to install it and set it up. It works great, fast and quietly. I've had it for a number of months and I've never had to reboot it. Highly recommended.

Don't keep firmware up to date.
Good product but the software gets worse with every release.
