Works if you have the time.
This scalder warms up to the proper temperature and made our turkeys much easier to pluck. It takes several hours to warm up the water (even in Texas). When it is around 150 degrees, though, it stays there while you scald and process your poultry. A cover is highly recommended for the warm-up. I plan on adding insulation to mine in as well.

Doesn't heat water adequately
This only has one small heating element, and it's advertised time of 30 minutes to heat cold water to scalding temperature is inaccurate... I've let it sit for ninety minutes and it only got up to 85 degrees. It does hold an accurate temperature once the water's hot, but both times I've used it I had to add hot water in order to get it up to temperature. Probably ok if you're doing chickens at home and get it started WELL in advance, but doesn't work if you're bringing it other places.

This does the job well. Small learning curve.
We processed our birds last fall. This helped quite a bit.Twist the toe nails to get them to come off easy. The thermostat is not so easy to find and adjust. The one I got ran too hot and I'm working on fine tuning it.Heats up fast and recovers heat well.

heat up a little slow.
heat up a little slow. I insulted around it and build a box around it to hold the heat

Works Just Fine
We filled our tub with hot water to start. Temp was about 130 before plugging it in. It took about 30-45 minutes or so to bring to 145. Average temperature was 145-150. We did 36 chickens (roughly 10 at a time) and the water was great. So much easier than using a propane heater. Easy to clean, light weight. I would probably insulate the outside if the weather was colder just to prevent heat loss.

Great for heritage turkeys
I like that it keeps the temperature even throughout the process. Plug it in a few hours early, first thing, and then the scald temperature will be perfect. I put a cover over it to heat up faster on cold mornings. It’s easy to hose clean with all your other equipment at the end of your work.
